BOURNS completes acquisition of RAKON, expanding into frequency control & timing solutions

RIVERSIDE, Calif., June 10, 2026 -- Bourns, Inc., a privately held manufacturer of electronic components and solutions, today announced the successful completion of its acquisition of Rakon Limited, a global leader in frequency control and timing technologies.

Headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand, Rakon brings a portfolio of precision frequency control and timing products, including crystal oscillators, filters, and related components that generate, condition, and distribute highly accurate timing signals in advanced electronic systems.

This acquisition expands Bourns’ product portfolio adding oven-controlled crystal oscillators (OCXOs), temperature-compensated crystal oscillators (TCXOs), voltage-controlled crystal oscillators (VCXOs), crystal and SAW filters, resonators, and high-reliability subsystems and equipment for commercial, space and defense applications.

Demand for these components continues to grow as 5G networks, AI data centers, and commercial satellite constellations require tighter synchronization at every layer of the signal chain. Rakon has served these markets for more than 50 years, with particular depth in defense electronics and space systems, where the company holds ESA qualifications and EN 9100 aerospace certification.

“Rakon brings deep expertise in a product category that touches every system we care about,” said Al Yost, President and Chief Operating Officer of Bourns, Inc. “Timing and frequency control underpin 5G base stations, AI data center synchronization, satellite payloads, and defense applications. Adding these capabilities to Bourns’ existing power, protection, and sensing portfolio gives our customers a broader set of solutions from a single trusted source.”

The acquisition adds approximately 750 employees, four manufacturing facilities, and six R&D centers across New Zealand, France, the United Kingdom, and India to Bourns’ global operations. Rakon also brings proprietary XMEMS® photolithographic microfabrication technology and an in-house ASIC design program that spans multiple generations of semiconductor chips for oscillator products.

With the transaction complete, Rakon will operate under its existing brand as “Rakon, a Bourns Company,” ensuring continuity for customers while leveraging Bourns’ global scale.

The combined company will offer customers a broader range of electronic component solutions, from circuit protection and power management through precision timing, backed by an expanded global manufacturing and R&D footprint.

“Rakon’s engineering team and product portfolio are a strong fit with Bourns,” added Yost. “Together, we can serve the growing need for precision timing in AI infrastructure, space, and defense while extending Rakon’s reach through Bourns’ worldwide distribution network.”

Bourns was advised by Rothschild and Cameron Partners as buy-side advisors, Simpson Grierson as lead outside counsel, and Shanahan Partners on campaign communications.

As AI compute scales, power density – not just total watts – has become the limiting factor. Delivering high-density, high-efficiency power at the point of compute, while responding to fast-changing demands, is now one of the most critical challenges in system design.
